\t \t \t \t \tIn our last review, we commended AVG's decision to reduce the installation steps. It still contains a toolbar offer, and despite the universal hatred toward being fooled into installing yet another browser helper object, AVG's toolbar actually does include useful security options like Do Not Track. Again it's a tradeoff but if you really wanted DNT's features, then there's a standalone version available for free on Firefox and Chrome in their respective extension stores.

AVG Anti-Virus is a selection of anti-virus and internet security software developed by AVG technologies for multiple platforms including Windows, Mac and Linux.AVG technologies formerly known as Grisoft launched its first product named Anti-Virus Guard (AVG) in 1992 in Czechoslovakia, a simple but effective free anti-virus program for Windows. By 1998 the AVG software was introduced to Germany, UK and the U.S. with the free edition of the program raising awareness for AVG. With advances in computer software technology and a rise in internet security risks AVG evolved over the years to include a whole range of new security features in the AVG anti-virus package such as anti-spyware, root-kit protection, anti-spam, e-mail protection, web-browsing filter and a P2P monitor all working to effectively identify and eliminate security risks.AVG Anti-Virus is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X and Mac OS Lion. Older versions of AVG Anti-Virus are still functional but are not supported with updates from AVG technologies; it is advised to use latest versions of AVG software as they include updates to its virus database making your PC safer.Pros: Automatically installs updates, includes a number of internet security features making your PC safe, free edition available with range of features.Cons: Regular registration pop-up window, tries to install browser modifications, no firewall included.

The app offers various features that safeguard devices against downloading harmful files and opening unsafe links. Avira protection is good but it misses important features that the others include as standard. More than any of the others, it seems to be a hook into the paid version rather than a genuine attempt at a comprehensive free product. Microsoft Security Essentials was the worst choice of all for security.
Hi, I would like to point out that the free version of Avira no longer installs on XP 32bit SP2, this has been the case for some time now (March 2011 i think) so for many still using XP SP2 32bit Avira does not support it, If you have an old version installed it will not update. I have no idea if this is the case with the paid for version but i would have thought so and i have not used the others in this reveiw *yet* as an alternative.
I uninstalled AVG 2012 and it still was there then ran this program(x86) version and its gone now. Thanks for the tool. I am now with MalwareBytes PRO antivirus and its the best one ive used. not so process demanding and is a perfect spotter for unwanted files or programs. Even the malwarebytes free worked better than avg 2012

If free antivirus tools are so good, why should anybody pay? For one thing, many of these products are free only for noncommercial use. If you want to protect your business, you must pony up for the paid edition. At that point, you should probably consider upgrading to a full security suite. After all, it's your business's security on the line.
In addition, many companies don't offer full-scale tech support for users of their free editions. The first time you need extra help digging a particularly stubborn piece of malware out of your system, you might regret the lack of support.
Security companies typically pay for the privilege of being included in testing. In return, the labs supply them with detailed reports that can help improve their products. The number of labs that include a particular vendor serves as a measure of significance. In each case, the lab considered the product important enough to test, and the vendor felt the price was worthwhile. The labs don't necessarily test a vendor's free product, but most vendors pack full protection into the free product, enhancing premium versions with additional features.
One easy way to keep your PC protected is to install all security updates, both for Windows and for browsers and other popular applications. Windows 11 makes it easier than ever to stay up to date, but there are plenty of security holes in older Windows versions, in popular apps, and in add-ons. Scanning for vulnerabilities in the form of missing updates is a feature most often found in commercial antivirus products, but it does turn up in some free ones. In the list below you can see which products include these useful features.
Numerous free utilities devoted entirely to ransomware protection have come on the scene in the last few years. Alas, many of those have fallen by the wayside, among them Bitdefender Anti-Ransomware, Cybereason RansomFree, CyberSight RansomStopper, and Heilig Defense RansomOff. In any case, these are useful companion products, but they don't do the job of a full-scale antivirus utility.
There are also numerous free antivirus utilities that work solely to clean up existing malware infestations. You bring out these cleanup-only tools when you have a nasty malware problem. When the malware's gone, they have no further use since they offer no ongoing protection. Our favorite in this category is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it's one you should try if you've got a malware problem. But since they're free, you can keep trying others if the first one doesn't do the job. When the scare is over, you'll need a full-blown antivirus for ongoing protection.
But ultimately, relying on any one app to protect your system, data, and privacy is a bad bet, especially when almost every antivirus app has proven vulnerable on occasion. No antivirus tool, paid or free, can catch every malicious bit of software that arrives on your computer. You also need secure passwords, two-factor logins, data encryption, systemwide backups, automatic software updates, and smart privacy tools added to your browser. You need to be mindful of what you download and to download software only from official sources, such as the Microsoft App Store and Apple Mac App Store, whenever possible. You should avoid downloading and opening email attachments unless you know what they are. For guidance, check out our full guide to setting up all these security layers.
The full offline AVG files are a little bit hidden and 3 or 4 clicks away from the 4MB official online installer download link. You have to go to Support -> Installation files (at the bottom of the page) -> Full installation files.
